Concerning Russell Westbrook Update Emerges Amid Retirement Rumors

The NBA offseason has slowed down, as it typically does as summer winds down before training camps begin in late September and early October.

One notable player still on the open market, however, is 36-year-old point guard and NBA legend Russell Westbrook, who was recently spotted shooting hoops on a yacht — sparking speculation among fans that he might be returning this upcoming season rather than retirement, which some believe could be in the cards.

However, a concerning update regarding Westbrook’s current market emerged Thursday, according to NBA writer Kurt Helin of NBC Sports.

“Westbrook remains a free agent late into the summer after choosing not to pick up his $3.5 million player option with the Nuggets. So far, the market has not responded," Helin wrote. "The Sacramento Kings are the team most mentioned as having genuine interest, but unless (or until) they trade Malik Monk or Devin Carter (or waive a non-guaranteed player, which is unlikely), the Kings will not have the roster spot open. As of now, they have reigned in Monk trade talks, and he is likely to be with the team when the season opens. Where does that leave Westbrook? He has not been linked closely to another team.”

Russell Westbrook has cemented his legacy as one of the greatest point guards in NBA history, but in recent years—despite remaining productive in a team-oriented role off the bench—he has struggled to find long-term stability with a franchise.

His prime came with the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he spent his first 11 seasons. Since then, he has played for the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, and Denver Nuggets—without spending more than two seasons with any of them.

Last season in Denver, Westbrook averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds in 27.9 minutes per game off the bench. The numbers showed he still has plenty left in the tank if he can land with a team ahead of the upcoming NBA season, which tips off Oct. 21.
