Congratulations Glen Taylor, You are the Richest Person in Minnesota
Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

The Minnesota Timberwolves will play against the Denver Nuggets on Sunday night in game four of the Western Conference semifinals and sitting in the front row, right next to the Wolves’ bench will be the majority owner (for now) Glen Taylor.

Of course, we all know the ownership battle war that is taking place within the team. How it all comes to a resolution is anyone’s guess, but it’s unlikely we find out if Marc Lore takes Glen’s throne as majority owner until after this playoff run is complete.

Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor is Minnesota’s richest person

And what a fine throne it is. So fine that his ownership of the Minnesota Timberwolves, combine with his other assets, make Glen Taylor the richest person in the state, at $2.9 million (according to Forbes).

  • Glen Taylor bought a wedding service business for $2 million in 1975 and turned it into Taylor Corp., a printing firm with over $2 billion in sales.
  • Taylor, who worked at the wedding business throughout college, stepped down as CEO of Taylor Corp. in 2015; he remains chairman.
  • A Minnesotan, Taylor owns stakes in the state’s NBA team, the Timberwolves; WNBA team, the Lynx; and the United FC soccer team.
  • In 2016, he sold 5% of his stake in both basketball teams to Lizhang Jiang, the NBA’s first Chinese minority owner.
  • Taylor also owns farmland in Minnesota and Iowa, as well as the Minneapolis Star Tribune, which he bought in 2014 for nearly $100 million.

“I like the garden and the farm stuff because I’m by myself, and it’s the opposite of what I do all day long: sit in meetings, solve problems, listen to people, hear complaints and deal with bad things. That’s my job.

Glen Taylor’s only quote from his Forbes profile

Taylor came in near the bottom of Forbes’ list (No. 41 of 50), which included the richest person from every state in America. He ranks No. 1,203 in the world today.

Bernard Arnault (Hennessy Louis Vuitton) is the richest person in the world, according to the list. The richest person in America is listed as Elon Musk.

That must have made Jeff Bezos made, though, because he has now pulled ahead of Twitter (X)’s new owner, in Forbes’ real time rich person power rankings.

Where does Marc Lore rank on Forbes’ lists of rich people?

It’s worth noting that, not only is Marc Lore not the richest person in his state, but I can’t tell you anything about where he lives or how much he is worth based on any of Forbes’ list of billionaires.

That’s because, if you’ve followed any of Forbes’ regularly updated lists of rich people, you might have noticed that Forbes has never included Lore in any of its billionaire, unlike thousands of others.

Why that is seems to be somewhat unanswered, at least from what I have been able to gather. Some evaluations of Marc Lore’s worth pin him at as much as $4 billion. A recent report from the Wall Street Journal wrote his worth as $3.3 billion.

Both evaluations would mean he is worth more than Taylor, at least according to Forbes. Why exactly the seemingly obvious billionaire isn’t listed appears to be somewhat unanswerable. Maybe he upset the wrong people at Forbes?

It’s hard to say, because even if he doesn’t have the same type of liquid assets Taylor does (which has been alleged), Forbes’ lists are based on NET worth, which include assets and stock market portfolios.
