Cooper Flagg hoped to have landed in a dream situation with the Dallas Mavericks. It is far from it.
As the undisputed number one pick of the 2025 NBA Draft even before the Lottery, teams were desperate to land the rights to select Cooper Flagg.
There was a combination of outrage and cry of conspiracy when the Dallas Mavericks landed Flagg, just 12 months after reaching the NBA Finals.
But with the new NBA season underway, the Mavericks look like one of the worst teams, even with Cooper Flagg.
Yet to recover from the Luka Doncic trade, and desperately awaiting Kyrie Irving’s return from injury, the Mavericks are struggling with a 3-8 record.
The Dallas Mavericks lost a close game to the Milwaukee Bucks 116-114 to continue their slump.
They were outscored 37-26 in the fourth quarter, giving up the lead they had built up.
Flagg has admitted recently that he has never lost like this in his short career, and it is a new experience. It was not one he had been told to expect in Dallas.
After the latest defeat to the Bucks, Flagg was asked in his press conference about how he is dealing with the team’s losing start to the season.
Flagg responded: “That’s the tough part. Previously you have bad games, don’t play up to your standard, it’s a little easier to look past and move on from when your team is winning.
“At the end of the day you play so many games, all I can do is keep working, keep showing up, get in the gym, trusting the reps, trusting the work I’m getting with the coaches watching film.
“Continue to be confident, I know who I am and what I’m capable of, it’s one of those things where you have to brush it off and look forward to the next day.”
Cooper Flagg had his best individual game of the season in the loss to Milwaukee, scoring 26 points.
And in the process, he became the first player since LeBron James in 2003 to score 25 points or more before his 19th birthday.
Flagg, 18, is showing great signs of progress despite the huge attention on his fortunes . There has been more talk about him already this season than there was all of last season on top pick Zaccharie Risacher.
