Cooper Flagg is one of the most hyped American prospects to join the NBA in the last decade, rivaling the likes of Zion Williamson and Markelle Fultz.
The Dallas Mavericks selecting Flagg first overall in the 2025 NBA Draft served as a form of absolution for the heavily scrutinized Luka Doncic trade. The arrival of the former Duke star has worked out incredibly well for the Mavs, as he has already established himself as one of the best young players in the league and is in contention for the Rookie of the Year crown.
Flagg's stardom is not restricted to the court, however, as the jersey he wore during the first half of his NBA debut fetched $1 million through NBA auctions. This marks a record for a jersey sold through NBA auctions, an initiative by the NBA and auction house Sotheby's which helps fans bid on game-worn jerseys of their favorite players.
Flagg had an impressive outing in his debut game, registering a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds against the San Antonio Spurs. The Mavericks ended up losing 125-92, but the forward made sure he left a mark on the game offensively. Flagg has averaged 20.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.1 assists, picking up the offensive mantle in Kyrie Irving's absence. While there are defensive deficiencies in his game that need to be ironed out, his elite athleticism and length have allowed him to average 1.2 steals per game.
The ongoing NBA Auctions Weekly: Icon Edition will run through Monday, with the NBA Rookie Debut Auction coming up on March 17. The auction will include debut jerseys from Kon Knueppel, VJ Edgecombe, Dylan Harper and other notable rookies. Before this blockbuster sale, the record for the highest sale done through the NBA auctions was held by Victor Wembanyama for the jersey he wore in the second half of his debut. That sold for $762,000 in November 2023.
