The race for Rookie of the Year has already taken shape a month into the 2025 NBA season, and two familiar names sit near the top. Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel spent last year together at Duke, helping lead the Blue Devils to a Final Four run before falling to Houston.
Now the two former teammates are on opposite sides of the NBA, both carving out major roles and building strong early resumes. On Tuesday, a message from Flagg’s mother added a warm twist to the growing conversation when she publicly praised Knueppel on social media. What made it stand out is that Knueppel is currently one of Flagg’s biggest challengers for the league’s top rookie honor.
He is an amazing young man and player. Would love him in Dallas!

Kelly Flagg responded to a post discussing Knueppel’s early-season performance by writing, “He is an amazing young man and player. Would love him in Dallas!” Her words showed the right connection between the two families after one season at Duke. The appreciation also shows how respected Knueppel is among those who know him best.
Although both players now compete for different franchises, the shared history from their college run remains strong. As the NBA calendar moves deeper into the year, Knueppel becomes one of the main players standing between Flagg and a potential Rookie of the Year trophy.
Knueppel has appeared in 14 games for the Charlotte Hornets, who have opened the season at 4-10. He has played heavy minutes from the beginning, averaging 32.9 per game. His production has matched the trust placed in him, scoring 17.6 points and grabbing six rebounds per contest. He recently poured in 32 points in an overtime loss in Milwaukee, a standout showing in his hometown and one of the strongest performances by any rookie this year.
Charlotte has leaned on him to carry scoring stretches, especially with injuries effecting the team early. His efficiency and size on the wing have made him an immediate contender in the ROY race.
Flagg has also taken on a large role for the Mavericks, who sit at 4-11. He has played in all 15 games, averaging 33.7 minutes with 15.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. Dallas has faced a challenging slate early in the season, placing additional responsibility on the rookie, who has spent time as the team's point guard. His defensive instincts, energy and playmaking have stood out, giving the Mavericks a strong piece as they try to find consistency.
Despite some early negativity from outsiders, Flagg’s performances have been steady, and his ability to impact multiple areas of the game keeps him right in the mix in the Rookie of the Year race. Many expect his role to expand even more as the season moves along.
The connection between the players adds a fun story to one of the league’s best early-season races. Both were teammates at Duke, both played big-time roles in a deep NCAA Tournament run and now both are key pieces on rebuilding NBA teams. Kelly Flagg’s supportive message shows that competition does not erase relationships built before the league, even as the two rookies push toward the same award.
Dallas and Charlotte will meet twice this season, first on January 29 in Dallas and again on March 3 in Charlotte. With both rookies playing major roles, those matchups could become showcase nights for two of the brightest young talents from the 2024 draft class.
