Could 76ers MVP be on his way out in Philly?

Philadelphia fired Doc Rivers when he couldn't get out of the second round. But their MVP can't get to the conference finals either.

Joel Embiid lost in the second round for the fifth time in the last six years, hitting a wall exactly where Rivers has so many times. James Harden also lost in the second round for the fifth straight year, but he did make the conference finals three times in the past (2012, 2015, 2018). In Game 7 against Boston, the duo combined for 24 points on 8-of-29 shooting.

For his part, Embiid said that he and Harden can't do it alone in Philly.

But Harden is likely to opt out of his contract this summer — he hired an agent in February, his first since 2017 — in search of a max contract. If that deal is with the Sixers, then Embiid and Harden aren't going to have options for getting help, unless they can trade Tobias Harris and his $39 million contract. (Harris outscored both Harden and Embiid in Game 7 with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting.)

The deal might not be with the Sixers, however.

With the coach fired, his sidekick possibly leaving and the 76ers lacking both cap space and three of their next five first-round picks, there are "whispers" Embiid could demand a trade, according to the New York Post.

Where to? The obvious place is New York, where the team is run by Embiid's former agent, Leon Rose. Plus, the Knicks have plenty of young players, future picks and expiring contracts like Evan Fournier that they'd need for such a blockbuster deal. The only question is whether Philadelphia would deal Embiid to a division rival.

Speaking of teams with a lot of draft capital, the Oklahoma City Thunder could be a dark-horse candidate for Embiid, with their 15 first-round picks through 2029. They could even offer a Philadelphia a different future center in last year's No. 2 pick, Chet Holmgren, who has a ton of potential and a foot injury — just like a young Embiid!

Embiid could also land in a city that's been led by a superstar big man in both of their trips to the NBA Finals. That's the Orlando Magic, who could have two top-11 picks in this year's draft. They also have Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero, plus young studs Jalen Suggs and Franz Wagner. Orlando can also send back young players like center Wendell Carter Jr., big man Bol Bol, point guard Cole Anthony and Gary Harris' contract for ballast.

We'd normally consider the Phoenix Suns, especially with Deandre Ayton seemingly on the trade block. But after trading five first-round picks for Kevin Durant, the Suns simply don't have the ammunition to add Embiid to their superteam.

Three second-round losses were enough for Philadelphia to part ways with Rivers. How many second-round losses before Embiid decides to part ways with them?
