Could John Konchar make sense for the Cavs?

John Konchar is back on the market. So yes, naturally, somebody was going to connect him to the Cavaliers.

Guilty as charged. But at least I’m not alone.

Mack Perry of Cavs On SI also made the case for Cleveland to take a look at Konchar on an Exhibit 9 deal, and while there’s no indication the Cavs are actively pursuing him, it’s at least an easy fit to understand.

Now, Konchar isn’t going to solve the Cavs’ biggest roster questions. He’s not that kind of player.

What he does offer is experience, positional rebounding, defensive activity and a willingness to play without the ball. Those are useful traits for the back end of almost any bench, especially one that doesn’t have much financial flexibility left.

Perry noted that Konchar has consistently graded well as a rebounder for his position and has also been unusually disruptive defensively for a wing his size. He doesn’t need touches, can create extra possessions and generally does the sort of things that don’t require plays to be called for him.

That’s the appeal. The Cavs already have plenty of offense. What they could still use around the edges are players who defend, rebound, understand rotations and don’t require much maintenance.

Konchar, 30, fits that description. He appeared in 56 games between Memphis and Utah last season, averaging 4.4 points. He was better statistically after the trade to the Jazz, averaging 5.9 points in 26 games.

Again, this isn’t to say the Cavs should rush out and sign him. It’s more that if they decide to hand out a veteran camp invitation, Konchar is the type of name that would make sense.

Bottom line: Not every roster move has to change the season. Sometimes you’re just looking for somebody who can help you survive a Tuesday night in February.
