It almost makes too much sense. That is, assuming the Kings are ready to start making sense.
Michael Malone as the next coach in Sacramento? Hey, it’s happened before — so why not again?
The Kings have already made one retro move this offseason, bringing back former advisor Scott Perry as GM.
Perry is now deciding the fate of interim coach Doug Christie, who did a decent job in his half-season. Christie deserves consideration for the job, and Perry has said he will get it.
But if not Christie, then the Kings should put a call out to Malone. Maybe they have already. Or maybe they’ve at least talked to his people.
There’s no telling if Malone would do it. He could be annoyed with the Kings (specifically owner Vivek Ranadive) after how things ended when Malone coached the team before 2013-14.
That said, his time in Sacramento didn’t end nearly as wildly as did his time in Denver. As you know, Malone was fired by the Nuggets with less than a week left in the regular season.
So whatever Malone’s feelings are about Ranadive … well, they’re probably better than Malone’s feelings about Nuggets owner Josh Kroenke.
Plus, it’s been 10 years since the Kings fired Malone. It’s likely water under the bridge. Malone went on to bigger things, coaching the Nuggets to the championship in 2023.
So, yeah, he’d be worth some consideration. Sources tell Hoops Wire he might be interested.
Malone? Back with Kings? Stranger things have happened. Malone just found that out firsthand with the Nuggets.
