Could the Rockets Really Trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo?

If Giannis Antetokounmpo were to ever ask out of Milwaukee, would the Houston Rockets have the assets to get him?

According to Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey, they might.

Bailey recently proposed a blockbuster trade idea that sends Antetokounmpo to Houston in exchange for Fred VanVleet, Amen Thompson, a 2027 first-round pick (via Phoenix), a 2028 pick swap, and first-rounders in 2030 and 2032.

That’s six assets — including two starters — for a two-time MVP.

“Yes, that would hurt,” Bailey wrote of including Thompson. “But the chances of Thompson becoming a multi-time MVP are pretty low, even if he does have plenty of star potential.”

“Trading him, VanVleet (and his hefty salary), and a boatload of picks for Giannis would give the Rockets one of the best starting frontcourts in the league. He and Alperen Şengün can play together.”

Why It’s Gaining Buzz

The Bucks were bounced in the first round by the Pacers and haven’t made a serious run since winning the 2021 title. Giannis is 30 now, coming off another elite season (30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, 6.5 assists), but his long-term future isn’t guaranteed — even after signing a three-year, $175M extension last October.

Meanwhile, the Rockets pushed the Warriors to seven games and could be looking to accelerate their rebuild. Adding Antetokounmpo to a core of Alperen Şengün, Jabari Smith Jr., Reed Sheppard and Jalen Green would instantly vault Houston into West contention.

Amico’s Take

Is this trade likely? No. Is it fun? Absolutely.

If Giannis ever did ask out, teams like the Knicks, Heat, Thunder, and Warriors would be all over it. But don’t sleep on the Rockets — they’ve got the picks, the cap flexibility, and an owner (Tilman Fertitta) who wants stars.
