Could this rising star sign the NBA's first $400M contract?

The Boston Celtics and Jaylen Brown recently agreed to a $304M supermax extension, the richest contract in NBA history. Bigger deals will eventually be completed as revenue continues to rise for the league.

Sam Quinn of CBS predicted Oklahoma City star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will be the first NBA player to sign a $400M contract. 

Quinn's prediction seems spot-on. SGA is a rising star coming off the best season of his career. He earned All-NBA First-Team honors as he led Oklahoma City (40-42) to a season that exceeded expectations. SGA averaged 31.4 points — the fourth-highest mark in the league — 5.5 assists and 1.6 steals and shot 51 percent from the field.

Gilgeous-Alexander, who celebrated his 25th birthday on July 12, has scratched the surface of his potential. 

His All-NBA First-Team selection already makes him eligible for a supermax extension before his max extension expires in 2027. If he continues to play at the level he showed last season, he'll merit a $400 million deal."

In its recent rankings of the NBA's top players, The Ringer placed SGA 13th.

“No player has broken out this season quite like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, whose barrage of floaters, layups and difficult pull-up jumpers are as idiosyncratic as they are unstoppable," the outlet wrote. 

Added The Ringer: "Almost every high-volume scorer in the NBA is well acquainted with the 3-point line. Not Shai. … He’s historically proficient driving the ball and unafraid to set up green teammates in the earliest stages of their own development.”

Oklahoma City must eventually sort out what could become a complicated financial situation. The Thunder's Chet Holmgren, who's only 21, Jalen Williams (22) and Josh Giddey (20) have star potential. Holmgren, the former Gonzaga star, has yet to play in his first NBA game. None, however, have made the leap SGA has in his game.

By the time Gilgeous-Alexander can sign an extension, these players will likely be on much bigger contracts. At that point, OKC will need to make some tough decisions, but it will likely build around SGA.
