CP3 Retirement: Should OKC Retire Chris Paul’s Jersey?

Chris Paul was a huge part of the OKC Thunder’s history. With the CP3 retirement talks in full bloom, should they consider retiring his jersey? After all, he played in the city even before there was the Thunder, and his lone season with the team proved to be more impactful than most people think.

With the Los Angeles Clippers guard calling it a career by the end of this season, it’s sparked a lot of discussions surrounding his jersey retirement. For starters, it should be a no-brainer that the Clips will be retiring his jersey there. After all, he spent most of his career with the team. He also enjoyed a fair time in his run with the New Orleans Hornets, and even the Phoenix Suns.

CP3 Retirement: Should OKC Retire Chris Paul’s Jersey?

But will Paul find his jersey hanging in Oklahoma City’s rafters? That’s another topic worth discussing among many sports fans. After all, there are a lot of valid points that would actually make Paul’s jersey worthy of hanging in OKC.

Paul Helped OKC Emerge in the NBA

As far as history goes, Paul has been an integral part of the Oklahoma City Thunder, and even the city itself. With the devastation brought by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Paul actually first played his rookie season in OKC. At the time, it was the first time that Oklahoma City held a major league game. The Oklahoma City Hornets would go on to become known for two seasons, and Paul played a huge role in that.

While Paul excelled and won the Rookie of the Year award and was a standout for two years, Oklahoma City also prospered. When the time needed for the Seattle Supersonics to relocate, OKC was the next big option. And the rest was history.

In two seasons with the Oklahoma City Hornets, Paul averaged 16.1 points, 8.4 assists, and 4.8 rebounds in 142 games. He would then rise to prominence in the succeeding years, becoming a 12-time All-Star. The Thunder, on the other hand, would rise up as a contender, taking power in the Western Conference.

If Paul didn’t play well in his time in OKC with the Hornets, maybe the Thunder wouldn’t be in Oklahoma City right now. It was Paul’s impressive game that made the Hornets relevant there, which eventually paid off in the long run.

The Borrowed Season Was a Success

The 2019-20 season was supposed to be an all-time low for OKC. They started to move on from the old era of the Thunder. The Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden project failed. So did the Westbrook, Paul George, and Carmelo Anthony tests. So when Sam Presti made a barrage of trades and started the rebuild, Chris Paul came in.

Paul was traded for Russell Westbrook, along with two protected first-round picks. OKC at the time was positioning itself for a rebuild. They also traded Paul George away, and got Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in return along with a flurry of picks. This Thunder team was starting their rebuilding process and was tanking for the bottom spot in the West.

Despite having only a 0.2% chance of making it to the playoffs in that season, Chris Paul would exceed expectations. In a season halted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Thunder went swinging under his lead. They finished as the fifth seed in the Western Conference, despite many doubts about Paul. OKC losing in seven games in the first round is tough, but it was a shining season to remember.

SGA learned a lot about being a leader from Paul. Lu Dort was also learning how to be a smart defender from him. In the long run, OKC was reaping the benefits of this deal up to this moment. Today, SGA is a rising elite star and the reigining MVP. Dort is an elite defender and is making the rounds among the best defenders in the NBA.

The Chris Paul Legacy

Overall, Paul laid the seeds for the Thunder’s championship five years later. Indeed, OKC is still making the most of what Paul has left behind in Oklahoma City. It is a part of his legacy in the game that continues to live on — even if he played just one season with the team.

After all, the Thunder are a relevant team thanks to him. While there are still a lot of games left to play in the 2025-26 season, Paul returning to OKC for one last time is worthy of a national TV schedule. OKC is slated to play the Clippers for the last time on December 17th, so that’s the date that CP3-Thunder fans can look out for.
