Dalen Terry on shooting an airball vs. the Los Angeles Lakers: "A little too excited"
USA TODAY Sports

Chicago Bulls guard Dalen Terry admitted he was excited about the prospect of playing more minutes. With the Bulls missing Zach LaVine and recently losing Torrey Craig for up to two months due to a foot injury, Terry knew his number might be called.

And when it was, the 18th overall pick from last year’s NBA Draft played with energy and confidence on both ends of the floor. However, the former Arizona Wildcat admitted that he could do a much better job of making shots.

Shot an airball

Terry’s numbers from the Bulls’ 124-108 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night won’t pop off the page, but they were solid two points, five rebounds, and three assists in 21 minutes of action. However, what Terry remembered most was the airball he shot on a three-point try from the corner that went up and over the rim.

“I think I played good. I gotta make some shots. I had an airball today. I don’t know what happened. A little too excited,” Terry shared.

Terry’s excitement is understandable. After all, the 21-year-old played in just 38 games during his rookie season, logging in a total of 214 minutes. He’s gotten more court time this season, having already played in 12 of the Bulls’ first 29 games.

Making the most of the opportunity

Terry shared that Craig has been his biggest supporter, encouraging him to play his best when Bulls coach Billy Donovan puts him on the court.

“It’s unfortunate what happened to Torrey. But he embraced me the most. He was like, ‘C'mon, bro, it’s your time to go,’” Terry said.

Terry knows this could be the break he’s been looking for to carve out a consistent spot on the rotation, so he intends to make the most out of it.

“I already knew with the injuries and how everything was going that there would be playing time that could be increased for me, but you just never know. Nothing is ever set in stone, so just try and make the most of what I can with the minutes I get.”

More than the hustle and youthful exuberance that he brings to the Bulls, it’s the joy that he plays with that Terry hopes endears him to the team and its fans.

“(I’m) just being a guy out there that brings some more joy to the team,” Terry said.

“That’s sometimes something that we lack — having fun. I think when I’m out there, we have fun.”
