Dallas has Luka Doncic, and as long as that is the case, they are going to be in the mix. The enduring question is always going to be how to surround him with enough to win big.
He was a totally different player, but they eventually figured it out with HOFer Dirk Nowitzki. Dallas continues to tinker with the formula but it does not feel like they are quite there yet.
The Mavericks turned into a strong defensive team last season under coach Jason Kidd. They also reached the conference finals so even though I am not optimistic about them being better this season. That is a pretty high bar.

Dallas was in the Western Conference Finals last season. They lost the series 4-1 to Golden State but it is hard not to call it a successful year. The other major thing of note from last season was the trade of Kristaps Porzingis to Washington. The pairing of his with Doncic never really amounted to much and they were able to move off of his big contract. In return, they got guard Spencer Dinwiddie, a useful player who is going to be of even more use this season, with their current roster makeup. Dallas was second in the NBA in points allowed last year as Kidd refused to let his team slack on D, even though Doncic is not much of a defender.
Southwest Division: +145
Western Conference: +1200

With Luka Doncic as the center of everything, this team will look very familiar to last year. The biggest changes were guard Jalen Brunson moving on to the Knicks and forward Christian Wood coming over from Houston. With no Brunson, the Mavs are going to have to figure out who leads their attack when Doncic is not on the floor. Wood can score, but the big man is not much of a defender and it will be interesting to see how he can be productive for a team like Dallas with his style of play.
Dallas also brought in Jevale McGee, a veteran big man who is still a functional player at both ends of the floor. He can protect the rim and knows that any shots he gets are going to be a result of his hustle. He does not need to be featured. Given how much success the Mavs had defensively during the regular season it will be interesting to see how they play this year. When your lead guy takes plays off at that end it can be hard to keep the team accountable long-term.
Luka Doncic To Lead in Points +480, Assists +850
The Mavs were in the Western Conference Finals last season but I am not seeing a return to that level of team success this year. Many teams in the West have gotten better but that is not what it looks like in Dallas right now. I do think that Doncic could have his best individual season to date, which is saying something as he averaged 28ppg and just under 9apg last season.
There is no player in the league who is in as much command of his team's offense, with as little star support, as Luka. He could easily average 30/10 by just being a little more efficient and that kind of production is going to have him in the picture for sure. The payouts are solid too as he is not the favorite to lead in either category.
