Dallas Mavericks Assistant Coach Arrested On Saturday Afternoon

An assistant coach for the NBA's Dallas Mavericks was arrested Saturday on serious charges.

According to a report from WFAA.com, Mavericks assistant Darrell Armstrong was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The Dallas Police Department responded to a call in the 1000 block of Ross Avenue at around 3:45 a.m. Saturday, where they encountered Armstrong and a woman with whom he'd been having an argument.

Per authorities, during the altercation, Armstrong, 56, "hit the woman with a gun and threatened to shoot her." He was booked into jail Saturday morning and has since posted bond.

"The Dallas Mavericks are aware of an incident involving a member of our staff and are gathering all relevant information surrounding the incident," the team said in a statement. "We take this matter seriously. The employee has been placed on administrative suspension pending the outcome of legal proceedings. This matter is currently under review by the appropriate legal authorities. Due to this fact, we will allow the legal process to run its course and we will refrain from further comment while proceedings are ongoing."

Armstrong has been an assistant coach with the Mavericks since 2009. In 2011, he helped the team win its first NBA championship.

A native of Gastonia, N.C., Armstrong played college basketball at Fayetteville State before playing multiple seasons in the USBL, CBA and overseas. He eventually broke into the NBA with the Orlando Magic in 1995.

Armstrong played for the Magic until 2003, moving on to suit up for the New Orleans Hornets (2003-04), Mavericks (2004-06), Indiana Pacers (2006-07) and New Jersey Nets (2007-08). The 6-foot-1 guard won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year and Most Improved Player awards in 1999 and also participated in the Slam Dunk Contest at the 1996 All-Star Game.
