The Dallas Mavericks finally filled their coaching vacancies on Wednesday, with the hiring of the sixth and final coach. That coach is a three-time NBA All-Star. Read on for further details surrounding the Mavericks’ latest hiring.
The Dallas Mavericks have had a successful offseason. The Mavericks won the NBA Draft Lottery, selected Duke star Cooper Flagg with the first pick of the NBA Draft, and filled the team’s coaching vacancies.
The Mavericks lost six assistant coaches in the last five months. However, Dallas entered Wednesday morning with five of the six coaching vacancies filled in, and then filled in the sixth coaching vacancy on Wednesday afternoon.
NBA insider Marc Stein posted on X, formerly Twitter, “UPDATE: Both Phil Handy and Popeye Jones have agreed to join Jason Kidd’s coaching staff in Dallas, league sources tell @TheSteinLine and @DLLS_Sports. Handy and Jones will join Jay Triano as newcomers … with Mavs coaching consultant Frank Vogel now Kidd’s associate head coach.”
The Dallas Mavericks’ coaching staff is now complete. The Mavericks’ coaching staff currently consists of Jay Triano, Frank Vogel, Popeye Jones, Mike Penberthy, Jordan Sears, and Phil Handy. Handy, 53, doesn’t have postseason experience, but brings championship coaching experience to the table. Handy’s coaching resume includes three NBA titles. One with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016, one with the Toronto Raptors in 2019, and another with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020.
The Dallas Mavericks’ current coaching staff resembles the 2020 Los Angeles Lakers’ coaching staff. Both coaching staffs have Kidd, Handy, Penbarthy, and Vogel. Vogel, now 52, served as the Lakers’ head coach from 2019 to 2022.
The Mavericks’ coaching staff is set to embark on a postseason journey in 2025-26. The Mavericks have a mix of veteran players and young phenoms, such as Flagg. Flagg, 18, reportedly plans to add his game to the Mavericks by playing several different positions.
