Dallas Mavericks news: A lot of the Minnesota Timberwolves‘ success this past season can and should be credited to the outstanding play of superstar big man Karl-Anthony Towns. This man has been through a lot in his first nine years with Minnesota, and alongside Anthony Edwards, KAT has now finally led the Wolves to a Western Conference Finals berth for just the second time in franchise history.
At this point, however, Mavs head coach Jason Kidd isn’t ready to lay down the red carpet for Towns just yet.
One thing you cannot fault Towns for is a lack of confidence. A few years back, the 7-foot center made an audacious claim about being the greatest shooting big man ever:
“Honestly man, I ain’t gotta play like nobody. I’m me,” Towns said back in 2021, via Jon Krawczynski The Athletic. “I’m the greatest big man shooter of all time. That’s a fact. You can see the stats. I ain’t got to play like no one else. Everyone trying to find themselves to be the second version of me when I’m the first version. I don’t got to be the second version of someone else. I’m already an original. I don’t have to be a duplicate of someone else.”
To be fair, Towns did back up this hot take by winning the All-Star 3-Point Contest the following year. Either way, his GOAT claim still remains to be a polarizing topic to this very day, to say the least.
Mavs head coach Jason Kidd recently shared his opinion on Towns’ previous declaration as Dallas makes their preparations against KAT and the Wolves for the upcoming West Finals series. While Kidd recognizes Towns’ shooting prowess, the Hall of Fame point guard has refused to crown him as the king:
“Everyone has a right to their opinion… But yeah, he can shoot it… Dirk [Nowitzki] was the first to start that. So I think Dirk would definitely have something to say.”

Kidd played several years alongside Mavs legend Dirk Nowitzki, who incidentally, is the only other player above 7 feet who has won the 3-Point Contest. There is no doubt in Kidd’s mind that it’s his former teammate who deserves the title of the greatest shooting big man of all time over Towns.
