ESPN’s Shams Charania confirmed on Wednesday that Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving underwent a successful surgery to repair his torn ACL. On March 3, Irving suffered a torn ACL on his left knee in a game against the Sacramento Kings. He didn’t complete the game and finished with seven points, a rebound and an assist in a 122-98 loss.
With his injury, he’s been ruled out of the entire 2024-25 NBA season. This was a huge blow for the Mavericks, who have experienced several setbacks with most of their players getting injured.
According to Charania, the procedure was done at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City on Wednesday. HSS Chief of Sports Medicine, Dr. Riley J. Williams was the surgeon who operated. The NBA Insider’s sources said there were no damage to any other ligament or the meniscus.

Following the surgery, Irving will be on the road to recovery to get back to his old self.
Irving appeared in 50 games for Dallas, averaging 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists on 47.3% shooting from the field. For the majority of the season, he was the team’s number-one option because his co-star, Luka Doncic, missed significant time because of a calf injury.
Although the veteran guard is 32, it did not hinder him from being the leader. His play this year earned him his ninth All-Star appearance. Irving would have had a case to be in one of the All-NBA teams. However, the 65-game rule prevents him from earning any NBA awards.
Since he was injured, the Mavericks have gone 3-8. Overall, the team is 11th in the Western Conference with a 35-38 record and their chances of making it to the postseason are slim.
Everyone was caught off guard when the Dallas Mavericks traded away Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. It wasn’t just the fans who were surprised, as players didn’t know how to react when they found out about the deal. Irving was one of the players who was heavily affected by the transaction as he’s grown closer to being a friend and teammate of the Slovenian star.
In a recent livestream session on Twitch, Irving about his initial thoughts on the matter.
“It was emotional for a lot of people, and it was emotional for me too. I ain’t gonna lie to you—I struggled a little bit the first few days. But after a while—yo—you get to where you are by making some incredible moves. And mind you, everybody’s going to have their opinion about what we should’ve done or what we should’ve did. But we can only deal with what we’re doing now,” Irving said.
Irving helped Doncic lead the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA Finals last season. They were one piece away from being a better matchup against the Boston Celtics, which is why the management traded for Klay Thompson. However, their plans changed when they traded away the five-time All-Star.
