Of what has been triggered after a blockbuster Luka Doncic trade, or what they like to call in Dallas, the words trade in the franchise’s history, the Mavericks have finally found their new face.

According to reports from Shams Charania and Tim MacMahon, the Dallas Mavericks have hired Masai Ujiri as team president and alternate governor. This marks a bold shift in direction for a franchise looking to reset after a turbulent stretch.

Ujiri arrives with a championship pedigree, best known for constructing the Toronto Raptors’ 2019 title team. His resume also includes an Executive of the Year award during his time with the Denver Nuggets, along with a consistent track record of playoff success across 15 seasons.

“This is a critical step in meeting our goals,” Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont said. “We are very excited about the future of our team.”

The hiring follows a six-month search after the dismissal of former general manager Nico Harrison. Dallas struggled to a 26-56 record this season, prompting a broader organizational rethink, particularly after the controversial trade of the former franchise centerpiece in 2025 reshaped the roster.

Ujiri’s arrival also represents a philosophical shift. For years, the franchise, under minority owner Mark Cuban, rarely brought in outside leadership at the top level. This move breaks from that pattern, placing full basketball authority in the hands of an external, proven executive.

The new president will inherit a team in transition, now centered around Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg and armed with financial flexibility after multiple roster-clearing trades.

His immediate priorities include navigating the upcoming draft and reshaping the roster to establish a sustainable identity, to say the least.

What could the Dallas Mavericks Expect From Masai Ujiri?

The arrival of Masai Ujiri would trigger a structural reset for the Dallas Mavericks. His track record suggests Dallas can expect aggressive but calculated moves.

He famously reshaped the Raptors into a championship team, which also included the high-risk trade for Kawhi Leonard in 2019. That willingness to take decisive swings could define his approach in Dallas, especially after the franchise’s recent course of struggles.

Player development will be another priority, as Ujiri has consistently turned undervalued talent into key contributors—players like Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet.

Equally important is culture, as he is known for establishing disciplined, accountable environments, something the Mavericks have lacked in recent seasons. His presence should stabilize both the locker room and the front office.

Finally, expect patience with purpose. While Ujiri isn’t afraid of blockbuster moves, he typically aligns them with a clear competitive timeline.
