Dallas Mavericks Lose To Golden State Warriors 137-131 In OT

The Dallas Mavericks concluded their three-game homestand against the Golden State Warriors on Monday, but the Warriors beat the Mavericks 137-131 in overtime at American Airlines Center. Golden State improved to 34-38, while Dallas fell to 23-49.

The Mavs hosted Brain Health Awareness Night presented by UT Southwestern. The theme night raised awareness about brain health challenges, provided education about brain health topics, and honored those impacted by brain health issues.

Dallas’ starting lineup featured Max Christie, Marshall, Cooper Flagg, PJ Washington Jr., and Daniel Gafford. Dallas ruled out Dereck Lively II (right foot surgery), Kyrie Irving (left knee surgery), Brandon Williams (concussion protocol), and Caleb Martin (right heel contusion).

Dallas recalled Guard AJ Johnson from the Texas Legends of the NBA G League on Monday. Golden State’s starting lineup featured Brandin Podziemski, Melton, Moses Moody, Draymond Green, and Kristaps Porzingis.

Golden State ruled out Jimmy Butler III (torn right ACL), Seth Curry (left adductor strain), Stephen Curry (runner’s knee), Quinten Post (right foot injury management), and Al Horford (right calf strain).

Mavericks vs. Warriors Recap

Dallas had an opportunity to capitalize on Golden State’s injuries. Golden State’s defense was rather sloppy. LJ Cryer made back-to-back three-pointers to help the Warriors keep the game close in the first quarter. Flagg threw down a transition dunk to give the Mavs a 17-14 lead. Golden State took a 34-31 lead to end the first.

Golden State made eight three-pointers in the first. Moody made one of the eight threes. Moody passed Baron Davis for 10th place on Golden State’s all-time threes list.

Dallas went on a 10-0 run to open the second quarter. John Poulakidas provided a spark off the bench with back-to-back three-pointers. Golden State kept the score close. Will Richard made a long-range three-pointer. Dallas’ shooting picked up the pace, but Golden State went on a late 11-2 run. Dallas took a 73-63 lead into halftime.

Dallas shot 65.9% from the field in the first half. Dallas’ field goal percentage was its highest in a first half this season and its second highest in a half this year. Both teams saw a slow start to the third quarter but gradually picked up the pace. Flagg made a corner three-pointer. Moody scored 8 straight points to cut Golden State’s deficit to one point. Golden State went on a late 13-2 run. The game was tied at 98 through three quarters.

Golden State went on an 11-0 run to open the fourth quarter. Gui Santos excelled on the glass. Dallas refused to back down, even after Gafford suffered a right shoulder contusion and didn’t return. Klay Thompson made his fifth three-pointer of the game. Golden State made a mistake in leaving Christie open. Christie made a game-tying three. Marshall missed a game-winning three. Both teams were tied at the end of regulation.

Flagg recorded his eighth career 30-point game. Flagg, 19, broke a three-way tie with Kevin Durant and Luka Doncic, who had seven apiece, for the third-most 30-point games by a teenager in NBA history. LeBron James leads with 20, and Carmelo Anthony trails with 10.

Golden State made a bucket to open the overtime period. Golden State followed up with a 7-0 run. Dallas finally got on the board with a bucket. Both teams appeared to be exhausted, but the physicality remained intact. Moses Moody suffered a left knee injury and left the court on a stretcher. Golden State won 137-131 in overtime.

The Dallas Mavericks embark on a two-game road trip starting against the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. Mountain. Dallas can potentially pull off an upset by forcing turnovers while maintaining a strong defensive presence.
