The Dallas Mavericks signed a former draft pick to an Exhibit-9 contract, but they will have to give up another star to bring him back full-time.
The Dallas Mavericks have somehow turned around what felt like a hopeless situation. After the Luka Doncic trade to the Lakers, the Mavericks were in a dire situation.
However, they were handed a lifeline, as the Mavericks won the NBA Draft Lottery, earning the right to draft Cooper Flagg.
This summer, the front office has made some moves. One of them involved bringing D’Angelo Russell to the Mavericks.
And ahead of their preseason, the Mavericks signed Dennis Smith Jr. to an Exhibit-9 contract. But if the Mavericks want to keep him for the full season, they will have to give up an exciting prospect.
We learned yesterday that the Dallas Mavericks had signed their former No.9 overall pick, Dennis Smith Jr., to an Exhibit-9 contract.
However, Brett Siegel is reporting that if the Mavericks want to sign Dennis Smith Jr. to a roster spot for next season, they have two options.
They can either waive Brandon Williams, their two-way star, who has been doing quite well in the G-League. In fact, Williams won the G-League scoring title last season.
Their other option is to trade another star without taking back a heavier salary to try and create some cap room to bring Smith Jr. in.
If Smith is to earn an actual roster spot, the Mavs will need to waive either Brandon Williams or trade someone. https://t.co/gPsX50pPou

After seven years in the NBA, Dennis Smith Jr. would join Real Madrid for a brief stint. In fact, that stint didn’t last more than one month.
However, fans will remember that the last notable player to go from Real Madrid to the NBA was Guerschon Yabusele.
Yabusele, much like Smith Jr., had lost his spot in the NBA. But he would impress everyone with his stint with the 76ers.
And this summer, Yabusele earned a move to the New York Knicks. Perhaps Smith Jr. is targeting a similar return to form with the Mavericks.
