The Dallas Mavericks re-signed Guard Dante Exum. In a related move, Dallas waived Forward Olivier-Maxence Prosper. Read on for further details.
The Dallas Mavericks announced on Tuesday that they had re-signed Exum. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, per team policy. In a related move, Dallas waived Maxence Prosper. Prosper, now 23, required season-ending surgery to repair the ligament damage in his right wrist in early March. The injury was likely one of the reasons why he was reportedly on the trade block in recent days.
Exum, 30, most recently averaged 8.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game last season, along with 47.8% from the field and 43.4% from downtown. Exum’s career averages are 6.2 points, 1.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 18.8 minutes per game in 302 games (102 starts) with the Utah Jazz.
Exum’s career with the Dallas Mavericks began on July 14, 2023, after spending the two previous seasons overseas for FC Barcelona and Partizan Belgrade. Exum averaged 13.2 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game, while helping Partizan to the Adriatic League Championship. The Melbourne, Victoria, Australia native shot 41.9% from beyond the arc in the EuroLeague.
Exum is an injury-prone guard, but a low-cost and high-efficiency one. He is a veteran guard, but can’t seem to stay healthy. The Dallas Mavericks are waiting for Kyrie Irving to return, but Exum’s inability to stay on the floor is an issue. However, Exum already works well with Irving, 33. Exum’s basketball IQ, vision, and off-ball movement can outweigh the negatives, including injuries.
