The Dallas Mavericks’ future remains uncertain, but the Mavericks’ season has ended, and the best has been projected to come on Monday. The NBA Draft Lottery was held in Chicago, and 14 NBA teams hoped to beat the odds to claim the first overall pick in the upcoming NBA Draft in Brooklyn from Wednesday, June 25, to Thursday, June 26. Read on for the Mavericks’ odds.

Dallas Mavericks’ Pick

Monday marked the seventh year of the NBA’s new lottery system. The previous lottery system awarded a 25% chance that the NBA team with the worst record would win the first overall pick. Now, the new lottery system reduces the odds that the NBA teams with the worst records would win the lottery and reduces the other NBA teams’ odds across the board.

The Dallas Mavericks have a chance to get lucky, which has never happened in franchise history. Previously, the Mavericks turned the 10th overall pick into Dereck Lively II, who was originally picked 12th overall, and Olivier-Maxence Prosper, who was originally picked 24th overall, in 2023. The Mavericks traded the 10th overall pick, Cason Wallace, to the Oklahoma City Thunder to get Lively II, now 21, and Prosper, now 22.

The Mavericks had the 11th overall pick, pending the NBA Draft Lottery at 6:00 p.m. Central on Monday. The Mavericks had a 77.6% chance of staying at the 11th overall pick, with an 8.5% chance of moving up to the top four overall picks, and a 1.8% chance of getting the first overall pick, Cooper Flagg, the small forward who’s a consensus top selection. The Mavericks ended up getting the first overall pick and will likely select Flagg, 18.

Dallas Mavericks’ Projected Picks

Before the NBA Draft Lottery, Mavs.com projected that the Dallas Mavericks would pick one of these eight players: Michigan State’s Jase Richardson, Illinois’ Kasparas Jakucionis, Maryland’s Derik Queen, France’s Noa Essengue, South Carolina’s Collin Murray-Boyles, Georgia’s Asa Newell, St. Joseph’s Rasheer Fleming, and Florida’s Walter Clayton.

At the end of the day, the Mavericks will make a decision on who to pick, not the media members and fans. However, the Mavericks should prioritize picking Queen, 20, a 6-foot-10 power forward and center who can switch in virtually all defensive situations. Queen also knows how to handle the basketball, while showing the occasional flash of shooting the three-ball. Queen’s presence could improve the Mavericks’ defensive woes.

Final Thoughts

The Dallas Mavericks have their probable choices to choose from. The Mavericks reportedly hope to land a high-quality draft pick and perhaps a top-four selection. The Mavericks’ lone draft pick in the 2025 NBA Draft might not provide immediate assistance ahead of the 2025-26 NBA season, but it can provide some relief for the team’s overall performance and direction.

The Mavericks’ draft pick might not even ease the anger and frustration over the Luka Doncic trade, but now’s the time to look forward to the future. Doncic, now 26, struggled to stay in front of any NBA player defensively in the Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves’ Western Conference First Round series, just like Doncic’s defensive struggles as a member of the Mavericks from 2018 to 2025.
