Entrepreneur and former majority owner Mark Cuban recently expressed regret about whom he sold the Dallas Mavericks to. Read on for Cuban’s recent revelation to the general public. His comments caught many fans off guard. The admission adds a surprising twist to the franchise’s recent ownership shift. It also raises new questions about the team’s long‑term direction.

Why Mark Cuban Regrets Who He Sold The Dallas Mavericks To

Mark Cuban is widely known for his outspoken and direct approach in business and politics. However, Cuban’s revelation about his decision to sell the Dallas Mavericks is a rare yet blunt reflection that shows an emotional side to the 67-year-old.

In a recent appearance on the Intersections podcast, Cuban, 67, confirmed that he didn’t regret selling the Mavericks and added that he only regretted selling the team to the Adelson family.

The Pittsburgh native-turned-Dallas transplant said, “It’s a big emotional commitment. You hear the passion, the swings, the highs and lows. Now imagine going through that every single game. That’s hard.”

The Family Element

“Then there’s family. My kids were getting to the age where they might have wanted to work in that environment, and I didn’t want that for them. It can be abusive. If fans don’t like what you’re doing or the team isn’t winning, you’re the worst person in the world, and they treat you like it.”

“I don’t regret selling. I regret who I sold to. I made mistakes in that process, and I’ll leave it at that.” The former Shark Tank star has every right to express his feelings after selling the Mavs for approximately $3.5 billion in November 2023.

Since selling a 73% stake to Las Vegas Sands owner Miriam Adelson and her son-in-law Patrick Dumont, Dallas experienced numerous changes from top to bottom, in a direction he didn’t agree with.

Mark Cuban’s Outlook

Mark Cuban’s outlook appears to be fairly positive. Cuban is still a Dallas Mavericks fan, as he moved to Dallas, Texas, in 1982. However, Cuban’s relationship with the Mavericks shifted since he sold the team to Adelson, 80, and Dumont, who was born in 1974 or 1975.

The Mavs were the team that Cuban built and even changed the culture for the players, coaches, executives, and employees. Cuban’s regret about who he sold the team to is completely justified. The sudden change caused many MFFLs to turn against their team’s front office.

The Luka Doncic trade didn’t work out. The MFFLs and the rest of the NBA world never got the chance to watch a new Big 3 trio of Kyrie Irving, Cooper Flagg, and Anthony Davis play together. Nico Harrison was fired around 9 months after the Doncic trade, now 27.

The silver lining to all of the changes was the Mavs lucking out, winning the first overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft, and selecting Duke star Cooper Flagg. Flagg, now 19, is the new face of the franchise, thanks to his talent, leadership, and versatility.

Dallas Mavericks’ Outlook

The Dallas Mavericks’ outlook appears fairly negative, but the future isn’t set in stone, and the Mavericks can bounce back in the near future. With the right roster adjustments, they can quickly regain momentum. Their core talent still gives them a foundation most teams would envy.

The Mavs missed the NBA playoffs for the second straight year, but the setback might be a blessing in disguise. If Dallas competed in the NBA Play-In Tournament, they likely would’ve suffered a second straight loss, as they did against the Memphis Grizzlies on April 18, 2025.

What’s Next

The Mavs can overcome the negative effects of the injuries, inconsistencies, and trades. It’s just a matter of when and how, as Flagg needs a strong supporting cast around him to achieve short- and long-term success in Dallas.

Kyrie Irving’s return from a torn ACL in his left knee can help close out games for the team.
But, for now, Dallas should look to close out the 2025-26 NBA season strong, despite having nothing much to play for.
