A lot can change in a year, and LA Lakers guard Dalton Knecht knows it best.
The Los Angeles Lakers didn’t have a lottery pick during the 2024 NBA Draft. As a result, the fanbase didn’t have any major expectations from the picks that the team drafted.
Speaking of picks, the Lakers selected Dalton Knecht with the No. 17 overall pick and went ahead with Bronny James in the second round.
While James Jr. struggled to get going, Knecht showed early signs of success in his career with the Lakers.
During a November 2024 game against the Utah Jazz, Knecht had a breakout game that sold many Lakers fans a dream.
The Lakers walked away with a 124-118 win, propelled by a scoring outburst from none other than their rookie Knecht.
Knecht finished the night with 37 points and 5 rebounds. He also exploded for nine three-pointers made, tying the record for most by a rookie in a single game.
After the win, Knecht was praised by LeBron James as the King hit out at the 16 NBA teams that didn’t draft him.
All was going well for Knecht… until it wasn’t.
In a matter of a year, Knecht has fallen from the pedestal in the eyes of Lakers fans. Things started going south for Knecht when he was traded to the Charlotte Hornets.
The trade was later rescinded, but the damage was already done. Over the remainder of the season, Knecht played like a shell of himself, barely producing good results for the Purple and Gold.
Fast forward to the 2025-26 NBA season, and head coach JJ Redick has reduced the once-celebrated rookie to a fringe bench role.
After all, DK is averaging just 7.1 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 0.6 assists per game while playing an average of 17.8 minutes a night.
Knecht’s most lethal weapon was his three-point shot, but this season he’s shooting just 32.6% from deep.
At this rate, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Lakers part ways with Knecht for good sooner rather than later.
