Dante Exum reportedly signed a new contract with the Dallas Mavericks. Exum, 29, is an Australian star point guard who has been a member of the Mavericks since 2023. The Utah Jazz originally drafted him with the fifth overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. Read on for further details surrounding his latest contract.

Dante Exum: New Contract

Dante Exum re-signed with the Dallas Mavericks on a one-year deal. Exum’s new deal came just days after the Mavericks signed D’Angelo Russell to a two-year, $13 million deal. Both Exum and Russell, 29, are keys to a stronger backcourt in Dallas.

Last season, Exum averaged 8.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game, along with 47.8% shooting from the field, while Russell averaged 12.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game, along with 39% shooting from the field. Russell is a solid addition in the point guard position — a pain point the Mavericks have been emphasizing this offseason.

Dante Exum’s Career

Dante Exum’s career has seen stints in the United States and overseas, but it’s apparent that he’s received and applied advice from others to achieve success as a professional basketball player.

After getting drafted by the Utah Jazz, Exum reportedly did everything to build a relationship with his childhood hero, Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant. As a result, Exum asked for advice from Bryant and even worked out with him.

Bryant once told Exum, “There will be a lot of distractions off the court. It’s about how you handle those and focus on the court. That’s what is going to define my career.” Bryant’s advice especially applied to Exum’s first few years in the NBA, as Exum didn’t achieve an ideal start.

Final Thoughts

Aside from the recent roster shakeups, Dallas has also added to its coaching staff. Frank Vogel is reportedly finalizing a deal to join the Mavericks’ coaching staff, sources told ESPN. Vogel, 52, will serve as the lead assistant coach alongside Jason Kidd. Vogel last served as the Phoenix Suns’ head coach from 2023-24.
