Day'Ron Sharpe continues to impress for the Brooklyn Nets
USA TODAY Sports

Day'Ron Sharpe has proven himself as one of the best backup centers in the NBA. He is a consistent contributor off the bench with 7.1 points and rebounds per game. However, his recent performances have proven that he deserves heavy minutes.

In the most recent matchup against the Detroit Pistons, he got an 11-point and 11-rebound double-double while blocking four shots. He matched starter Nic Claxton's production in just 22 minutes, giving coach Jacque Vaughn stability in the frontcourt.

"Seeing all the work he put in, he looks like a totally different person from last year," Dorian Finney-Smith said about Day'Ron. "He can probably say the same about me, but I've been doing this for a while. I got history."

Sharpe is arguably the best rebounder in Brooklyn

While Claxton is the undisputed starter, Day'Ron has done a great in helping the Nets avoid issues with their big-man rotation. The former Georgia Bulldog is averaging 9.5 rebounds in 27.2 minutes, while the former North Carolina Tar Heel is averaging 7.1 rebounds in just 16.2 minutes.

This consistent level of performance has helped Sharpe secure the highest rebound percentage in the league. For the 2023/24 season, his percentage is 20.4% above renowned rebounders like Clint Capela and Rudy Gobert.

The Nets are only 13th in second-chance points per game at 14.5, but that will continue to improve as Day'Ron grows as an offensive rebounder. He needs to become a consistent scorer off those offensive boards to dominate the paint.

Coach Vaughn knows he can rely on Sharpe

In recent games, Sharpe has cemented himself as one of the best players off the bench. This has impressed Coach Vaughn, a positive sign for the 6'9" center moving forward as he keeps earning regular rotation minutes.

"He has the ability to rebound the basketball, and there's a toughness that's about him that we need on a lot of nights just because he's a big dude, and we need a big dude in the middle to push and grab rebounds and set screens and be okay doing that," Vaughn said after the win over Detroit.

The Nets' head coach acknowledging Day'Ron's consistent performances is a positive development for the team, providing a stable center rotation that many other teams covet, and establishing a robust foundation alongside Claxton and Sharpe.
