De'Aaron Fox, the former NBA All-Star who now plays for the San Antonio Spurs, recently appeared on FanDuel's 'Run It Back' show and claimed that Luka Doncic and Draymond Green are the "biggest complainers" in the NBA right now.
Ex-NBA player Lou Williams was discussing Luka Doncic with Fox when he asked him what he thought about Doncic's complaining.
"Luka's up there," said Fox when Williams asked him if Doncic was the biggest complainer in the league.
"Like Draymond will clothesline you and then look at the ref like 'What did I do?' I think a lot of guys definitely have it. A lot of times it's warranted, nah I'm not going to say a lot... sometimes it's warranted."
"Like y'all both played man, reffing is god-awful at times, so I'm not going to be like 'they shouldn't get it' cause a lot of times they should," said Fox to Williams and Chandler Parsons.
Then the show host Williams brought up an old incident when Doncic was with the Mavericks and Fox played for the Kings. In a video that went viral at the time, Doncic was complaining after an official called his foul on Fox. This video went viral not just due to Doncic's complaining, but Fox's reaction to his complaining in the video was hilarious.
"I was like 'bro you very clearly fouled me'.... that's why Malik is sitting there laughing too. I was like bro you smacked my whole arm. What are you complaining about?" said Fox in response to that incident.
Doncic was among the league leaders in fouls drawn in the 2024-25 season, averaging seven fouls drawn per game. Therefore, it's not like Doncic does not get calls from officials. Players constantly try to convince the officials that their version of events is correct and their decision should be followed. This is often seen as complaining around the league.
While on some level, the officiating needs to be open to scrutiny from players to create a level of accountability, but on the other level, there should be room for human error too. There is room for players to argue almost every call that has not gone in their favor. While Draymond is usually complaining on the defensive end, Doncic usually complains over fouls not given on the offensive end.
Officiating in the NBA is one of the most complicated tasks over the years. While decisions have become more accurate over the years with the help of the coach's challenge and officiating using the multitude of camera angles provided to them from the replay center in Secaucus, New Jersey.
But one of the key factors that influence officiating is player bias. From the viral video of an official consulting Michael Jordan before taking a decision in the game to blatant allegations of being a "foul merchant", officiating has been at the center of nearly all controversial stories in the game's history.
