Deandre Ayton’s stint with the Los Angeles Lakers could make or break his NBA career.
Despite being in the NBA for seven seasons, many believe that Deandre Ayton is yet to reach his full potential.
Evidently, joining the Los Angeles Lakers is a massive move for him at this stage in his career. But, it could backfire on him if he fails to impress one of the most passionate fan bases in the NBA.
Over the years, the Lakers have been home to several iconic big men, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal, and most recently, Anthony Davis.
Keeping that in mind, Lakers legend Mychal Thompson urged Ayton to prove himself and become a part of a lineage of great centers in franchise history.
“When I see him, I will say, ‘Hey man, this is your chance to show everybody how good you are, and the reason why you were that number one pick,'” Thompson said on ESPN LA.
He added: “If we did that draft today, obviously Luka would go number one, but you might still be number two. Show people why. You could be the next great Lakers center, it’s up to you.”
It feels like the former NBA legends have high expectations for Ayton. Even O’Neal motivated Ayton when he was drafted into the league.
Despite being an undrafted prospect, over the past few seasons, Austin Reaves has developed into a stunning star for the Purple and Gold.
According to Thompson, Reaves’ biggest quality is his passion for the game of basketball, and Ayton should replicate that during his tenure with the Lakers.
“Austin Reaves has a passion for the game, you can tell. Deandre can get there, I believe he will. I think he understands the responsibility that comes with putting on that Laker uniform,” he continued.
Thompson concluded by stating: “They are not bringing him here to be a 15 and 9 guy. He’s got to be 18 and 12, every night.”
Ayton averaged 14.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game last season, but to live up to Thompson’s expectations, the 26-year-old needs to take a short leap.
