The New Orleans Pelicans sit at the bottom of the Western Conference standings with a 2-15 record.
The New Orleans Pelicans have had a disastrous season, one that has seen Willie Green get fired.
To make matters worse, the Pelicans don’t have their 2026 first-round pick. They traded it to the Atlanta Hawks to move up in the 2025 NBA Draft to select Derik Queen.
Since the Pelicans paid a steep price to acquire Queen, there has been a lot of pressure on him. However, the rookie has shown a lot of positive signs thus far.
Queen has had some very nice performances so far this season, which suggests the price for acquiring him was worth it.
Queen has been in the zone in his last three games. He had 30 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals against Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets.
He then turned in back-to-back 20-point outings against the Dallas Mavericks and the Atlanta Hawks. In the game against the Mavericks, Queen almost recorded his first career triple-double, falling 3 rebounds shy.
The Pelicans haven’t been winning, but Queen has looked like the future cornerstone of their franchise.
Queen has been learning under DeAndre Jordan, who continues to be a positive mentor to the young 20-year-old.
There was some courtside footage posted on social media that showed Jordan coaching up Queen on the bench.

Jordan isn’t the All-Star center he once was, but he is proving to be a valuable mentor for Queen.
Jordan had another heartwarming interaction with Queen when Jordan spotted him sitting and talking to the reporters huddled around his locker after the Pelicans’ win over the Charlotte Hornets on November 4th.
Jordan immediately went up to Queen and told him to stand up and be proud of the incredible performance he just had while talking to the reporters.
Queen continues to draw comparisons to Nikola Jokic, while continuing to rack up some impressive numbers. Add that in with Jordan’s positive influence and the Pelicans might have a future star on their hands.
