The New Orleans Pelicans’ injury problems continued Friday night during their loss to the Boston Celtics.

Pelicans star guard Dejounte Murray left the game in the first quarter of Friday night’s game after suffering a non-contact leg injury. After the game ended, NBA insider Chris Haynes reported that Murray had suffered a season-ending torn Achilles tendon.

This is another tough blow for New Orleans who have seen their roster decimated by injuries this season. Of course, most of the Pelicans’ roster has missed significant amounts of time with injuries, which has led to their terrible season.

New Orleans currently sits 14th in the Western Conference with a 12-37 record. They are basically already eliminated from playoff contention and injuries have been a huge reason why.

Of course, the Pelicans have seen most of their stars deal with injuries this season including Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram. While Williamson has returned to the court, Ingram continues to be sidelined with an ankle sprain and he is joined by Herbert Jones, who is out indefinitely with a torn labrum.

With Murray’s injury, it is just another tough break for the Pelicans who will now be without their star guard for the remainder of the season. New Orleans had high hopes for a playoff run this season after acquiring Murray from the Atlanta Hawks in the offseason, but with the multitude of injuries they have dealt with, their playoff hopes have already been crushed.

This season, Murray was averaging 17.9 points, 6.5 rebounds, 7.6 assists and 2.1 steals per game while shooting 39.3% from the field and 29.9% from three. The 28-year-old has not had the best season consistency wise, but his impact, especially on the defensive end, was important for the Pelicans.

With Murray now out for the season, the Feb. 6 trade deadline becomes even more interesting for New Orleans. It is clear that the Pelicans are focused on their future, so with Murray’s injury, it is likely that they may begin a complete rebuild this season.
