DeMarcus Cousins hasn’t been shy about voicing his doubts over Nico Harrison’s handling of the Dallas Mavericks since Luka Doncic was traded.
Harrison became the centre of attention in NBA front offices after sending Doncic to Los Angeles in exchange for Anthony Davis. While the backlash was immediate and intense, it started to fade a bit when the Mavericks landed Cooper Flagg with the top pick in last year’s draft.
That move gave fans reason to believe that perhaps there was a clear path forward, even without their franchise star. But Harrison’s subsequent decisions have done little to back up that hope.
Cousins recently weighed in again, pointing out what he sees as a lack of vision for where the team is heading. Cousins didn’t hold back when asked about Harrison’s work this offseason during an appearance on Gil’s Arena.
“I don’t think they have any clue or idea what they’re doing right now,” he said. “They’ve kind of just made some random decisions…maybe it works, maybe it doesn’t.”
The 2025-26 season has only just begun, but Dallas fans are already growing frustrated. The Mavs opened the campaign with three straight losses, carrying over their poor form from last year.
The team did end up getting into the win column against Detroit and even managed back-to-back victories over Golden State shortly after. However, those results haven’t erased concerns around how the squad is being managed by Mike Brown and constructed by Nico Harrison – especially with an 0-3 home record to begin the season adding more pressure.
DeMarcus Cousins is completely confused by the direction the Mavericks have taken since trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.
He highlighted the conflicting approaches, pointing out that Dallas appears to be rebuilding with Flagg while also trying to compete with Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis, and Klay Thompson still on the roster.
According to Cousins, this indecision has given fans every reason to “panic” about where the franchise is heading under Harrison’s leadership.
“I don’t like anything that’s going on in Dallas right now,” Cousins said. “Obviously, with Kyrie being out, that changes a lot for this team.
“The same goes for Anthony Davis, but moving forward, I don’t feel like there’s a real identity. I don’t feel like there’s a real plan moving forward for this team.”
Chandler Parsons believes the Mavericks need to move on from Harrison, claiming that fans in Dallas won’t ever get over the decision to trade Luka Doncic.
According to Parsons, nothing will change how fans feel about the move unless Dallas wins a championship, and he doesn’t see them anywhere near that level right now.
“I’m panicking because, number one, it was one of the worst trades in the history of the NBA to trade Luka Doncic, and that frustration is still there in that building, in that organisation, and that crowd,” he explained.
“So no matter what they do until they win a championship — which they’re nowhere near at 3-7, basically dead last in the Western Conference — they have an issue with their GM. And everything they do is going to be wrong until they fire Nico Harrison. I truly believe that.”
Parsons feels Harrison has done irreparable damage since trading Doncic and sees little hope for him ever regaining support from a fanbase still upset by it.
“It’s not working,” he said. “You’re 30th in points per game; you’re one of the worst defensive teams; you’re 29th out of 30 in offensive rating. I’m panicking.”
