Free agent guard Dennis Smith Jr. will work out for the Knicks this week, according to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post.

Smith, 26, is trying to get back into the NBA after being out of the league last season.

The former No. 9 overall pick in 2017 has seven years of experience under his belt, including three partial seasons in New York from 2019 to 2021.

He was one of the main pieces the Knicks landed in the Kristaps Porzingis trade with the Mavericks.

Once known mainly for his explosiveness at the rim, Smith eventually carved out a niche as a high-level perimeter defender during stops in Charlotte and Brooklyn.

His career numbers stand at 9.7 points, 4.2 assists and 1.2 steals a game on .407 shooting.

Smith last appeared in the NBA with the Nets in 2023-24, playing 56 games. He then had a brief stint with Real Madrid, averaging 2.8 points in limited minutes.

The Knicks currently have 17 players under contract, with plans to add second-round pick Mohamed Diawara and possibly keep two of Malcolm Brogdon, Landry Shamet or Garrison Mathews.

Smith would face an uphill climb to crack that group, but New York’s front office wants a closer look before camp.
