Point guard Dennis Smith Jr. is headed to the Wisconsin Herd, the G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks per sources.

The move comes shortly after the 27-year-old guard was waived by the Dallas Mavericks last month. Sources say that Smith is scheduled to report to the team next week.

This development is particularly notable as the Mavericks’ G League team, the Texas Legends, had been in talks last month to acquire Smith’s G League rights from the Herd. Despite Dallas’ efforts to keep the guard in their system, the Wisconsin Herd appears to be his next professional stop.

A Look Back at Smith’s NBA Journey

Smith Jr. was selected as the ninth overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks, marking the start of his professional career which spans over seven years. The athletic guard showed great promise during his rookie season in Dallas, where he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2018.

His NBA career has seen him play for multiple teams, including the Mavericks, New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons, Portland Trail Blazers, Charlotte Hornets and Brooklyn Nets.

In his most recent NBA season (2023-24) with the Brooklyn Nets, Smith played in 56 games, averaging 6.6 points, 3.6 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per contest. His return to the G League with the Wisconsin Herd will provide him an opportunity to showcase his skills as he seeks a path back to the NBA.
