Derrick Rose has been an icon for the Black community ever since he became the youngest player in NBA history to win the MVP award in the regular season. He arguably brought the Bulls closest to their glory days since Michael Jordan retired. Having retired from the NBA himself, Rose spends most of his time in the Chicago community promoting basketball and chess.
Rose joined forces with former World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen to inaugurate the first-ever NBA Chess festival, also known as the Chestival, where several NBA players competed in a Blitz tournament. Following the event in Vegas, Derrick Rose spoke to the YouTuber 'AnotherJalen' outside the venue for a short but absolutely hilarious interview.
Jalen: "On a scale of 1 to 10, how Black do you think you are?"
Derrick Rose: "A 10."
Jalen: "A 10? We’re going to see about that today, I got a bunch of questions, if you get even one of them wrong, I’mma revoke your sh**, you ready?"
Derrick Rose: "See, you asked… I thought this was a regular interview."
Jalen: "It is."
Derrick Rose: "Alright then, come on."
Jalen: "You ain’t got sh** to eat in the crib, name your struggle meal."
Derrick Rose: "Uh.. Ketchup Sandwich."
Jalen: "Oooh! That’s definitely in the trenches. What’s a liquor all black people love?"
Derrick Rose: "Hennessy."
Jalen: "Is that your go-to?"
Derrick Rose: "Nah! Not my go-to."
Jalen: "What’s your go-to?"
Derrick Rose: "I don’t drink."
Jalen: "Solid and great answer. Name your top three favourite black people."
Derrick Rose: "My three brothers, Wayne, Greedy, and Reggie."
Jalen: "How do black girls scratch their heads?"
Derrick Rose: "They pat they shi*."
Jalen: "If you’re at a cookout, what kind of activity are you playing?"
Derrick Rose: "Spades."
Jalen: "Are you any good at it?"
Derrick Rose: "I’m decent."
Jalen: "What was the universal curfew when you were younger?"
Derrick Rose: "Street lights."
Jalen: "Ay! He's going crazy right now. If you can, huh, you can..?"
Derrick Rose: "Hear."
Jalen: "This is the last one. If Young Metro don’t trust you, what might he do to you?"
Derrick Rose: "I ain’t gonna say that, but you know, you know."
Whether or not these questions prove his blackness is still up for debate among fans on the internet. It will be interesting to see what else Rose has planned with the community after his retirement.
Derrick Rose is not the only NBA player who has become keenly interested in chess. The new generation of players, like Victor Wembanyama and Quinten Post, are also avid chess players. The Warriors' sophomore, Post, won the inaugural event this year and became the first-ever NBA Chess Champion.
