Desmond Bane recently opened up about the conversations that led to his shocking trade. The deal that sent Bane from Memphis to Orlando remains one of this offseason’s biggest moves.
The trade ranks among the most expensive in recent memory. Orlando sent Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, and five first-round picks to Memphis for the star guard.
Some analysts question the hefty price tag, while others believe Bane will thrive with the Magic. The veteran guard recently explained the situation behind his departure, including crucial conversations with Grizzlies GM Zach Kleiman.
The process began after Kleiman’s exit interview after Memphis got swept by champion Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round.
Desmond Bane revealed there were questions about several players’ futures, including his own and head coach Tuomas Isalo’s status.
“That’s exactly what happened [GM not sure 100% Bane will be on the team next year],” Bane told Zach Lowe on his podcast.
“We just got swept. That was a sour note to go out on, but then the vibe around the building was about coaching.”
Kleiman’s transparency impressed Bane during those difficult conversations. “Zach [Kielman] was upfront and honest with a few of us and told us like, ‘Hey, look there’s a possibility, I can’t guarantee anything’.
“And next thing, here I am,” he explained.
However, Bane has moved forward and embraces his new challenge in Orlando. He’s already begun connecting with future teammates Franz Wagner and Paulo Banchero.
“I think Franz is doing some international stuff this summer and P is out in Seattle doing his thing.
“We’ve texted multiple times, but we’ll have plenty of time to connect for sure,” Bane said.
The sharpshooter believes he fills Orlando’s biggest need. The Magic have lacked reliable perimeter shooting for years, and Bane shot 39.2% from three-point range last season.
Bane envisions himself completing Orlando’s starting five alongside Banchero, Wagner, Jalen Suggs , and Wendell Carter Jr.
“I don’t think there could have been a much better fit,” he said. “You put me next to a guard like Jalen Suggs that plays both sides of the ball, plays with speed in the open court.”
He praised his new teammates’ versatility and potential. “Franz is a do-it-all three, better defender than a lot of people realize. Paulo is going to be a first-team All-NBA type of guy for probably multiple years.”
“My skill set can really help take some pressure off of Franz and Paulo,” Bane added confidently.
After their first-round playoff elimination against Boston, Orlando aims to compete at the highest level with Bane leading their championship push.
