Kevin Huerter, who arrived on the team last February via trade, had his best performance in a Detroit Pistons uniform during their 129-108 home victory against the New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday night.
In his first start with the Detroit Pistons , Huerter filled the void left by the absent Duncan Robinson (wrist) by dropping 22 points, three rebounds, and four three-pointers on 9-for-14 shooting from the field in 34 minutes of action.
“Kev’s nice, man. Just playing against him over the last few years, I’d seen him as just a shooter. Him being here these last couple of weeks, I see he has a lot more to his game,” Jalen Duren said of Huerter via the Detroit Free Press. “He’s meshed really well with the guys. Just in the locker room, as a teammate, he’s been really cool. I’m excited, man. I’m excited for what he can bring to the team and continue to grow with him.”
“It has been our responsibility to figure out a way to get him on the floor because we know he is capable of helping us win games… He has since taken advantage of the opportunity. I love to see how aggressive and free he is. How free he is playing,” head coach JB Bickerstaff added.
Before starting against the New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday, Kevin Huerter hasn’t played more than 26 minutes in a game for the Detroit Pistons. But after yesterday’s performance, he will have more opportunities to showcase himself in the final stretch of the regular season.
“For me, it was all about trying to stay focused on just the basketball aspect,” Huerter told The Detroit News. “When you get traded, your whole life is done in that former city and on to the next one. So many people want to reach out and help, but since this is my second time going through it, I just keep it to basketball and try to help my team win.”
“I’ve definitely been waiting for it. Got a good opportunity tonight, was able to find a good rhythm early. Got to the rim a couple times, got layups, got easy ones. Just try to stay aggressive the rest of the game,” he added.
