Detroit Pistons guard Malik Beasley had unfortunate news strike at the worst possible time.

The sharpshooter is being investigated for a gambling-related issue involving the NBA and prop bets, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.

"The U.S. District Attorney’s office is investigating Detroit Pistons guard Malik Beasley on allegations of gambling related to NBA games and prop bets," Charania reports. "Serious development surrounding one of the top NBA free agents."

Beasley, like many other NBA players, is set to be a free agent in just 24 hours, allowing him to ink a new, long-term contract to secure a large amount of guaranteed money.

The nine-year veteran shot 42% on 3-pointers for the Pistons this past season, providing a major veteran and complementary presence as the franchise saw a major turnaround.

Beasley averaged 16.1 points per game, which had him set to earn quite a strong contract this offseason. However, with the report coming out one day before free agency opens, the Pistons -- along with the rest of the NBA -- will press pause on negotiating with Beasley or his representation.

"Beasley and the Pistons were in serious talks on a new three-year, $42 million contract to bring the free agent sharpshooter back to Detroit, but now talks are on pause," Charania continued.

Beasley was on track to lock down $42 million after an incredible campaign. Now, the Pistons, who will have salary cap room in free agency, will wait to make a decision on Beasley until the investigation develops.

Led by Cade Cunningham, who ascended to an All-Star-level player this past season, the Pistons will want to strike while the iron is hot and keep improving off their season.

Having to press pause to return a key contributor for years to come could throw a wrinkle in Detroit's offseason playbook.
