The Detroit Pistons have put a bit of a target on their back after making the NBA Playoffs last season. With a young core beginning to mold together, adding key veterans to bolster the roster is paramount to continue growing and exceeding expectations. The team made a free agent signing that may go under the radar but could be impactful going forward. Let’s take a deeper dive into who the team signed and what this means for the Detroit Pistons going forward.

Detroit Pistons Sign Caris LeVert

The Detroit Pistons were able to add a key piece to their roster as the team signed shooting guard Caris LeVert to a two-year, $29 million contract, per ESPN’s Shams Charania. This is a bit of a homecoming for the guard as LeVert played for the Michigan Wolverines for 103 games before entering the 2016 NBA Draft. LeVert came off the bench last season for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Atlanta Hawks as he played in 64 games and averaged 12.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 0.9 steals per game. His shooting numbers were strong as he shot 46.7% from the floor and 37.3% from beyond the arc.

With the news of Malik Beasley potentially being involved in a federal investigation, this could be a chance for Caris LeVert to be the team’s starting shooting guard and be paired in the backcourt with point guard Cade Cunningham. With the Pistons looking to continue improving and the Eastern Conference being littered with injuries to significant teams, this is a chance for a quality player to be added to a strong team that has aspirations of being a significant threat in the NBA next season.

With this being a multi-year deal, the Pistons have shown the chance to develop and play with LeVert as a key piece of the rotation. It will be difficult to find a better 1-2 guard combo than Cunningham and LeVert in the East.
