Devin Booker wants consistent effort, energy from Suns no matter the score

Struggling game after game with no resolutions in sight, the Phoenix Suns got a much-needed 109-99 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night which was only their second victory in the last nine games.

Seeing Bradley Beal and Jusuf Nurkić not being fazed by moving from the starting lineup to coming off the bench, getting back in the win column after these changes raised optimism that maybe there was light at the end of the tunnel.

Just when the vibes seemed like they were turning around, they went back to doom and gloom just 24 hours later. On a back-to-back, the Suns lost 115-104 to a woeful 8-27 Charlotte Hornets team, including giving up 37 points in the second quarter.

Phoenix is now 16-19 and moved down a spot in the Western Conference standings to No. 12, causing emotions to rise from the frustrated fans and players themselves.

Fingerpointing and blaming others when mistakes happen is not a recipe for resolving issues. When there are challenging times that teams go through, it’s how they respond and come out of difficult situations that will lead them to success.

With the vibes and energy changing depending on if the team is up or down, Suns star Devin Booker doesn’t want to see that inconsistency and instead wants them to be high no matter the score.

“You can’t have that. The vibes and communication being high when we have it rolling and things going well and then when we get in a tough spot, just kinda fold,” Booker said. “That’s how those five-point runs that teams have turn into 10, 15-point deficits. That’s something we have to work on. Stay with it, stay with it for 48 minutes and don’t try to play the blame game, stick with it… I just want to see the energy. Energy and effort high no matter what the score is. Just keep playing.”

It is very easy to give up if the score starts to get away from one team. The Suns have shown small effort on defense on multiple plays when down by a wide margin and look as if they are uninterested in pouring more effort in the hopes of stopping the other team’s momentum.

Phoenix is 2-8 in its last 10 games and is starting to see a distance start to form between it and teams that are currently in either a playoff or play-in spot.

At 16-19, the Suns are chasing behind the Sacramento Kings, Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs for a play-in spot as all of them have 18 wins. Sacramento is out of a play-in spot but has the same wins as the two others who are in.

With a blockbuster trade not expected to happen, the resolution will have to come from within. Even if Jimmy Butler was traded to Phoenix, he isn’t going to be the quick solution to every problem the Suns are dealing with.

Time will tell what is going to happen with the Suns going forward, but the players have to come together before it is too late.
