Dirk Nowitzki Sends Strong Warning to League Over Luka Doncic and Lakers’ Playoff Threat

Ask a Los Angeles fan, and he’ll probably call Luka Doncic a superstar, but ask someone who has played with him, and he’ll let you know how “genius” the Slovenian star is.

The Lakers are currently the bread and butter of the NBA circle, and there’s a good reason why Doncic is at the heart and center of it.

However, while LA is building momentum at the right time, Dirk Nowitzki believes the rest of the league should be paying close attention.

With Luka leading the charge, the Lakers have emerged as one of the more dangerous teams heading into the 2026 playoffs. The Slovenian guard has taken control as the franchise’s primary engine, producing at an elite level during a crucial stretch of the season.

Nowitzki, who shared the court with Doncic during his rookie year in Dallas, has seen that evolution up close. Speaking on Prime Video’s NBA broadcast, the Hall of Famer made it clear how difficult the Lakers star has become to contain.

“Luka has been playing incredible basketball, on fire for weeks now averaging almost 40,” he said. “He has his step back working and when the step back works, watch out other teams. He’s basically unarguable…. Is that a team you really want to see in the playoffs with 3 guys that can take over down the stretch? I’ve been impressed with them.”

Rightly said, that level of shot-making has elevated Los Angeles into a legitimate postseason threat. While LeBron James remains a key presence, the offensive identity now runs through Doncic, with Austin Reaves providing additional scoring and playmaking support.

However, it has not been a cake walk for him lately.

There’s a Silver Lining in Luka Doncic’s Suspension

Luka Doncic’s one-game suspension happened as it was bound to, and it could have come at a far worse time for Los Angeles.

The star guard will miss Monday’s matchup against the Washington Wizards after picking up his questionable 16th technical foul of the season. While losing their primary offensive engine is never ideal, the timing has a clear upside for a team pushing for playoff positioning.

The six-time NBA All-Star is dominating all around as he leads Los Angeles with 14 wins in its last 16 games while putting up scoring numbers we rarely see in today’s NBA. A brief pause, in that context, may not be the worst outcome, especially given what lies ahead on the schedule.

Washington enters the game struggling, having dropped 17 of its last 18 contests and sitting near the bottom of the standings. On paper, this is the least demanding matchup remaining, also the most manageable game for Doncic to miss.

More importantly, the suspension resets the situation. With only seven games left after Monday, it is unlikely he reaches the next technical threshold that would trigger another ban. That would be all the stability that matters for the Lakers as they look to secure the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference, where they currently hold a narrow edge.
