With key injuries to Mitchell Robinson and Precious Achiuwa, the New York Knicks have major holes in their frontcourt depth.
Sure, Karl-Anthony Towns is on a successful pace to begin his debut season with the Knicks, but the team has struggled to find a consistent solution behind him in the center position.
Those problems could be resolved according to one NBA Insider.
Bleacher Report's Greg Swartz suggested in an article detailing different moves all 30 teams can make to improve the roster that the Knicks could try and facilitate a trade with the New Orleans Pelicans for backup center Daniel Theis.
“Don't expect any major in-season trades from the New York Knicks after they gave up six first-round picks in trades to acquire Karl-A nthony Towns and Mikal Bridges this past offseason,” Swartz said.
“Instead, stabilizing the backup center spot is more important, as Mitchell Robinson and Precious Achiuwa have both missed the entire season thus far due to injuries. Theis … (is) capable of handling rotation minutes behind Karl-Anthony Towns.”
Theis carries a cap hit of just over $2 million this season with the Pelicans. With New Orleans struggling to stay healthy, there's a path for New York to bolster the depth of their frontcourt with the 32-year-old veteran.
With limited draft picks now available, New York will need to find a fair offer for a backup center like Theis, but he could provide the kind of high-quality minutes the Knicks have needed on the bench.
It's certainly a trade worth exploring at this stage of the season.
