Donovan Mitchell could have waited. Instead, he’s doubling down on the Cavaliers.
As first reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, Mitchell has agreed to a new four-year maximum contract extension with the Cavs, replacing the player option in his previous deal and keeping him under contract through at least the 2029-30 season, with a player option for 2030-31.
The extension is projected to be worth roughly $273 million.
The money is significant, but the message may be even bigger.
This marks the second time Mitchell has chosen to commit his future to Cleveland since arriving in the blockbuster trade from Utah in 2022. Early questions about whether he’d eventually leave have largely disappeared, replaced by a star who has repeatedly expressed confidence in the organization and its championship aspirations.
That confidence apparently extends beyond the court.
Charania reported that Mitchell has played a significant role in conversations with the front office this offseason and has been supportive of the Cavs’ efforts to improve the roster.
The offseason has been relatively quiet so far. Cleveland drafted Meleek Thomas in the second round and re-signed Thomas Bryant, while James Harden is still expected to finalize a new contract after declining his player option.
As you know, the Cavs also continue to be mentioned among the teams pursuing LeBron James.
Mitchell, meanwhile, is coming off another outstanding season, averaging 27.9 points while earning All-NBA Second Team honors and helping lead Cleveland to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in his career.
Now comes the next step.
The Cavs have their franchise player locked up again. Their focus shifts to building the roster around him in hopes of taking the final step toward an NBA championship.
