LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers seem ready for a split. James, however, isn't likely to retire after this season.
As such, it's only normal to see him tied up in countless rumors as he stars in the final year of his contract. Unsurprisingly, the Cleveland Cavaliers have emerged as his most likely destination.
With that in mind, Donovan Mitchell told SiriusXM NBA Radio that even though he would obviously love to play with James, he's focused on the task at hand and his current teammates.
"As a Bron fan, to be able to be a teammate would obviously be special," Mitchell admitted. "But that’s something not in my control. (...) There’s always going to be reports. It’s natural, it’s going to be a thing. But at the end of the day, to your point, my main focus right now is trying to get this championship. And whatever happens, it happens. (...) I mean, it’s LeBron James, right? But at the end of the day, that’s not my focus. (…) We just traded for James Harden, Dennis Schroeder, Keon Ellis, hey, let’s try to find a way to get a ring and go from there."
The Cavs were one of the most active teams at the trade deadline, acquiring the likes of Keon Ellis, Dennis Schroder and James Harden. Moving on from Darius Garland gave them the long-term financial flexibility to make a run at James in the offseason, assuming he does return for another year and leaves the Lakers. In the meantime, the Cavs' current franchise player will only focus on what he can control.
