Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green has offered his view on former teammate Kevin Durant’s big move.
After weeks of speculation, Kevin Durant was traded to the Houston Rockets. The deal was agreed days ahead of the NBA Draft, with Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks headed to the Phoenix Suns.
Durant was on the verge of a return to the Warriors midseason, with Green recently revealing just how close a deal came.
Various theories have been offered on why Durant shut down a trade, but one thing was clear; his time was up with the Phoenix Suns.
The trade has been widely viewed as a shrewd move for the Houston Rockets, and Draymond Green does not disagree.
Green was part of the Warriors team who eliminated the Rockets in a hard-fought seven game series in the playoffs.
Speaking on his podcast, Green said: “You add Kevin Durant to the roster, it’s an upgrade. Make no mistake about it… it’s KD. You add him to the roster, the roster is better.
“KD has familiarity with Ime Udoka as a coach, KD still wants to compete at the high level, and I think this team, when you look at the rosters of everywhere KD may go, this team did the least gutting of a roster that a team may have had to do, to make an upgrade and keep the roster in a good spot.”
Green added that he believes Jalen Green being traded was a direct result of his inconsistent performances for the Rockets in the NBA Playoffs.
He said: “Where they struggled was, Jalen had a very difficult playoff series, if he had a better playoff series they win. Who knows. But you’d like to at least think that.”
While Draymond Green cites Jalen Green’s playoffs as the reason he was traded to Phoenix, he believes Dillon Brooks‘ exit came for very different reasons, claiming it was purely financial.
Green explained: “Dillon Brooks, he was consistent all year, he was consistent he shot the ball well this year. Dillon Brooks is who he is. On a contract like he was on, he always going to be the throw-in piece. That’s just kind of the nature of the business.
“I don’t think Dillon Brooks was traded because Dillon Brooks did anything wrong. In this situation, I think Dillon Brooks was traded because in this business that’s how it works and your contract makes the money work.
“You look at how this team has been built, of course they going to throw Dillon Brooks before they throw Jabari Smith in. These young guys that were drafted by this general manager.
“Jalen Green was as well, but he ain’t going to get rid of all the people he drafted, he got rid of one.”
