Draymond Green has spoken about his heated exchange with Victor Wembanyama, giving some insight into what was actually said between the two during their confrontation.
With news breaking of Wembanyama’s calf injury, it is now clear that the French star will be sidelined for a while.
It is a tough blow, especially considering how well he was playing. Fans were just starting to see what he could really do, and now we will have to wait a bit longer for more of those moments.
One of Wembanyama’s latest highlights came against the Golden State Warriors when he threw down a dunk over Green. Even though it was waved off, the sheer confidence it took still made waves across social media.
Afterwards, the Frenchman told reporters he would not back down from Green and shared some details about their on-court conversation. The Warriors’ legend has since weighed in too, adding his perspective to what was said between them.
Green shared some thoughts about his clash with Wembanyama during a recent episode of his podcast. It was the 35-year-old who started the exchange, something that has become fairly common over the course of his career.
The back-and-forth began with the seasoned star drawing Wemby into the altercation, eventually leading to a dunk from the Frenchman.
Reflecting on what happened, Green said:
“I had a chance to battle with the big fella, Wemby. We had our moment. I know everybody spoke about the dunk. Right before the dunk, I blocked his shot.
“When I blocked his shot, I looked at him, and gave him a crazy look like, ‘Yeah, m———–!’… And he was like, ‘You’re too small!’
“I go, ‘you’re scared of me!’… ‘What? I ain’t f—— scared! Alright, watch this!’… That whole conversation happened walking from one block to the other block. And then we start fighting for position.

“Everything else just happened in slow motion… I thought I could get the lob when I saw it. But I had no chance of getting it… The only person who had a chance to get the lob was the guy who caught the lob.”
Wembanyama’s run-in with Green was another reminder that he does not shy away from a challenge. The rookie did not back down, even when going up against one of the league’s most outspoken and accomplished players.
During his training sessions over the summer, Hakeem Olajuwon and Kevin Garnett were two of the more prominent NBA stars who praised him.
Olajuwon even went so far as to tell Wembanyama that he was ready to take over the league – and early in his career, that prediction has already started to play out. At one stage this season, the Frenchman had more blocks than 24 NBA teams.
His recovery period will give him a chance to regroup mentally as well as physically. When he returns, expect him to pick up right where he left off.
