Draymond Green Takes Clear Stance on $229 Million De’Aaron Fox News

On Monday, the San Antonio Spurs signed guard De'Aaron Fox to a four-year, $229 million max contract extension. Prior to this deal, Fox had played just 17 games for the Spurs after they acquired him from the Sacramento Kings in February.

Following the news of Fox' extension, many began criticizing the move. This was mostly because of the idea that, while the Kentucky alum is a great player, he was not worthy of a max contract extension. Furthermore, San Antonio already has other fantastic young guards in Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper.

Amid the criticism, Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green sent a clear message and made his thoughts known on Fox' extension.

While many fans have expressed their opinion that Fox should not have gotten this contract extension, there is a completely different group that believes this is a good move for both sides. As it stands, it seems like Green is part of the latter.

In response to Kevin O'Connor's critique of the move, the four-time champion stood up for Fox and San Antonio, saying the one-time All-Star "will not be a worse player than he is today" across the next two years.

"Imagine the pieces you can bring in, in that salary slot, to help speed up a rebuild. One thing for certain, in the next 24 months, Fox will not be a worse player than he is today," Green wrote on Threads.

The Potential Is There for This to Work for De'Aaron Fox and the Spurs

The negative feedback surrounding San Antonio's decision to extend Fox to this type of contract is justified. Keeping him around for too long could stunt the growth of Castle and Harper, and he has only played five games alongside Victor Wembanyama. However, he is still their best guard on the roster, and he is only 27 years old.

Assuming Fox remains in San Antonio throughout his entire contract, he will still be just 32 years old by the end of it. Furthermore, if things go in the opposite direction, the Louisiana native should still have good trade value for the foreseeable future if the Spurs opt to move on from him down the line.

For a Spurs team that is looking to return to the postseason, keeping Fox around is likely a good move, especially given how intriguing a duo of him and Wembanyama is. How long he will stay in San Antonio remains to be seen, but as it stands, he appears to be a big part of their success, at least for the short term.
