Recently, the Memphis Grizzlies found themselves at the center of attention in the basketball world for all the wrong reasons, when numerous high profile NBA players, including Draymond Green and LeBron James, suggested the team relocate from Memphis. Green suggested that the Grizzlies instead be located in Nashville, due to his and other NBA players’ complaints about the hotel where teams stay in Memphis.
However, recently, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver took to the “Pardon My Take” podcast and called Memphis “a great market historically for the NBA,” per Matt Infield of Action 5 News on X, formerly Twitter.
He also mentioned that the team’s ownership has no interest in moving the Grizzlies, but also pointed out that he wouldn’t be opposed to the Grizzlies playing a few games in Nashville each season so as to become “Tennessee’s team.”
Memphis may not be a destination city as far as NBA cities go, but it does have a rich basketball history, one that may be entering a new era sooner rather than later.
Just a few years ago, the Grizzlies appeared to be one of the brightest up and coming teams in the NBA landscape, led by point guard Ja Morant. However, injuries, off the court issues, and an overall regression and play have made Morant a trade candidate for the Grizzlies over the course of the last year, although it remains to be seen whether another organization will be willing to part with any assets in order to bring him in.
The Grizzlies are currently counting days until the NBA Draft lottery, where they will hope for some good news regarding their 2026 first round pick. The lottery is set to take place on May 10.
