Dwight Howard, an eight-time All-Star and 2020 NBA champion, is the latest professional athlete to transition into a successful podcaster following a long-tenured career. Appearing on "The Rich Eisen Show" on Wednesday, Howard discussed the current state of the league.

The veteran center offered an analysis of San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, whom he compared to several Hall of Fame predecessors. Howard noted that the young player possesses the stature of Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar but integrates the perimeter capabilities of a modern guard.

“This guy is doing the jump shot with some Magic Johnson... and some KG,” Howard said, emphasizing that Wembanyama’s development includes seeking guidance from veterans like Jamal Crawford and Kevin Garnett to refine his ball-handling and mental fortitude.

“Not saying Kareem didn’t have a jump shot, Kareem was the hook… I’m loving what he’s doing on the court. I just want him to stay healthy.”

Howard suggested that Wembanyama, alongside other emerging talents, is expected to carry the league’s legacy forward.

Dwight Howard Reflected on Early Stages of His Own Career

The legitimacy of the Los Angeles Lakers’ 2020 championship, won within the restricted environment of the Orlando "bubble," remains a point of public contention. However, Howard defended the title, citing the unique psychological and physical demands of the period. He argued that the victory was secured during the "toughest time in the history of our world," noting the emotional sacrifices made by players who were separated from their families during the Covid pandemic.

Howard also reflected on the early stages of his own career. At that time, the center’s focus was primarily on athletic performance and rest. At just 19 years old, he wasn't able to participate in many of the social activities typically associated NBA life. This period included his "Superman" performance during the 2008 Dunk Contest and his contributions to the 2008 Olympic team.

“Everybody went crazy,” Howard said. “Yeah. And they were like, 'Yo, you really like Superman. Like, this is awesome. You got to do this in a dunk contest.'”

Currently, Howard has shifted his focus to "Above the Rim with D12," a podcast designed to facilitate high-level conversations regarding life both within and outside of professional sports. Additionally, the athlete continues to advocate for animal welfare through dog rescue efforts. Howard recounted a recent experience with a rescue dog named Angel, who remained focused on him throughout a flag football game, illustrating his ongoing commitment to charitable work.
