The Boston Celtics have now won one more championship than the Los Angeles Lakers, winning their 18th title in 2024. Lakers fans are rather upset about that and Dwight Howard made matters worse, by revealing a claim made by a former teammate who won championships with both franchises.
"I had a teammate that won with the lakers & Celtics that told me that’s it’s nothing like winning a championship in Boston and Now Al just said the same thing. I want to know what’s the difference lol."
While Howard tried to hide the identity of this player, it is quite obvious who he was referring to here. There are actually only two players in NBA history, who have won a title with both franchises. The first was Clyde Lovellette (with the Minneapolis Lakers and the Celtics) and the second was Rajon Rondo, Howard's former teammate.
Rondo won a championship with the Celtics in 2008, when they beat the Lakers in six games. He was then part of that Lakers team that beat the Miami Heat in six games in the 2020 NBA Finals.
I am sure Celtics fans would claim that they care more about the team and that players are made to feel like they're part of a family and whatnot, but I think there are some other reasons why Rondo would feel that way. For starters, he began his career with the Celtics and spent eight and a half seasons with them.
Rondo would obviously have a deeper connection with the Celtics than the Lakers, for whom he played for just two and a half seasons. Also, that title he won with them in 2020 was in the Bubble and it just wouldn't have felt the same as that triumph in 2008.
Rondo headed over to the Clippers after winning that title too, so there wouldn't have really been a time for him to soak it all in. He returned to the Lakers in 2021 but barely played and was traded mid-season.
After all that, I would have been rather surprised if Rondo didn't feel the way he does. Maybe one day, we'll have another player win championships with both teams to give us a better idea of whether winning in one place means more than the other.
While Rondo has now retired, Howard isn't ready to walk away from the game just yet. He's been playing overseas in Taiwan since 2022 and has now brought over two of his former teammates from the Lakers to join him. NBA insider Shams Charania reported that DeMarcus Cousins and Quinn Cook will be teaming up with Howard on the Taiwan Mustangs.
"2020 Lakers reunion: DeMarcus Cousins, Dwight Howard, and Quinn Cook will play together on the Taiwan Mustangs in the Asian Tournament in July, sources say. Howard serves as a player and part-owner of the Taiwan league."
Howard became a shareholder of The Asian Tournament and a player and part owner of the Mustangs in 2024. The 38-year-old has been hilariously trying to recruit NBA players to join him in Taiwan since he went over but wasn't having a lot of success in that quest.
Fortunately for Howard, Cousins was already in Taiwan. He led the Taiwan Beer Leopards to the Taiwan T1 League Championship and was named Finals MVP. As for Cook, he was last playing in Puerto Rico. Howard also revealed that one other player from that 2019-20 team would be joining them and it'll be interesting to see who that is.
