Dwyane Wade found himself in hot water recently after he voiced his support for Nick Cannon on social media. The three-time NBA champion publicly addressed the controversy for the first time during "The Arena," a special that aired on TNT Monday night. Wade says that his support for Cannon was all about standing behind a black leader in the world, not the divisive message he was spreading.
"So, my support of Nick Cannon was not about his words, or my support was not of hate speech at all," Wade said. "My support of Nick Cannon was as a Black leader in our community, as a friend, as someone I’ve seen with Viacom for 20-plus years. We’ve watched Nick grow up."
"We live in this culture right now where it’s all about cancel. Everyone wants to cancel each other in this culture. How about we take this opportunity and we sit down and educate each other."— NBA Central (@TheNBACentral) July 21, 2020

Cannon was fired from Viacom after refusing to walk back anti-Semitic statements he made while voicing his admiration for Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. After Cannon was fired, Wade tweeted at Cannon, telling him to "keep leading." The tweet was met with immediate criticism, as people noted that Farrakhan has been unapologetically anti-Semitic and homophobic over the years.
Wade has said since then that he does not support "hate speech" but still stood by Cannon, calling him an "unbelievable role model" while also calling out "cancel culture" for stifling public discourse.
"We live in this culture right now where it’s all about cancel," Wade said. "Everyone wants to cancel each other’s culture. How about we take this opportunity and we sit down and educate each other? That’s what I got out of this week."
